For Your Collection:

Meet the Sasquatch
Chris Murphy, with the help of John Green and Thomas Steenburg, as well as many others, may have produced the best Sasquatch/Bigfoot book since Green's "Sasquatch: the Apes Among Us" in 1978.

This book is deceptively thin, but holds within over 640 pictures, some of which have never been published before.

Walking With the Great Apes: Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, Birute Galdikas

In this study of three great female primatologists, science journalist Montgomery moves beyond biography into ethnology, taking a step that goes well beyond even her subjects' research. Goodall, Fossey and Galdikas each made a similar leap, the author contends, moving from observers and recorders to an almost shamanistic quest to enter the world of the apes they studied.

An office with a view...

>> Editor's Note:

Oregon is beautiful this time of year. Heck, Oregon is beautiful ANY time of year... but when I take a deep breath, my lungs are filled with the wonder of it.

Out my office window, there is a summer-goldened pasture nestled beneath a forested ridge. I know that dozens of ridges just like this one stretch all the way to the Oregon coast. When the wind blows just right, the smell of the river meanders through my windows. I look up at the trees on the ridge and wonder which of them a Sasquatch may have passed beneath recently. How many times have the buzzards, soaring overhead, spotted the giant, hairy creatures that I've spent a good 16 years of my life looking for?

I wait for screams to echo through the canyon and I sometimes think I hear them - I stop short, listening intently, only to realize that it's the neighbor's peacocks calling. Through binoculars, I watch the replanted clear cut on the mountaintop for signs of large, bipedal life.

That's the trouble when you're a bigfoot researcher. You know that the beauty and the mystery of the forest is more beautiful and mysterious than most people realize and you're always looking for that extra "something". Sometimes you forget how spectacular the wilderness is, even without the added mystery.

Bigfoot ‘lives’ at museum dedicated to its legend
FELTON, Calif. – It’s hard to explain why I had to go to the Bigfoot museum.

I recently received the following from Bigfoot researcher Richard Grover:

Date: 09/02/2005
Location: Snohomish County, WA

We hiked for about an hour into the high country near XXXXX, WA. What we thought would be just a routine campout turned into an exhilarating event. Between 6 and 6:30 pm, we began hearing what sounded like rocks being thrown towards us, but maybe 50 yards away. We actually tried to dismiss this as squirrels cutting cones. However, we didn't think they would throw them horizontally.

Just then everything got very quiet! We went to bed around 9:30 pm. Then around 1 am, Larry woke us up and said he just heard a large tree break, like a big limb being broke off. There was no wind. We got up around 6:30 am, packed our gear to leave, and once again the rocks started coming from the direction of a huge rock slide we had camped near. This time, the sound resonated as it hit a big tree about 75 yds from us. There appeared to be 5 boulders thrown at this time. We estimated these may have weighed about 20 lbs, each. There were not any screams heard; however, we did note that the area seemed to be especially quiet. We plan on further campouts in this area and will try setting up a feeding station, before winter. It was a terrific time had by all.

Bigfoot: The Mormon Connection- by Michael Nave

Several of the stories posted within the Oregonbigfoot.com newsletter have related to Bigfoot and its connection to Native American folklore. In this issue I would like to touch on a different aspect of Bigfoot and an encounter that has been told time and time again within the Mormon religion. My work takes me all over the United States for many different training seminars and conferences. Recently, I met up with several people of the Mormon faith. One of these people, knowing of my interest in Bigfoot, suggested that I look into the "Mormon connection," The following story comes from my research on this topic.

David Patten was a Mormon Priest who traveled and preached the Mormon gospel from 1832-1838. In author Spencer W. Kimball's book entitled "The Miracle of Forgiveness, " there is a passage where David Patten is quoted regarding his meeting with "a very remarkable person who had represented himself as Cain." The following passage from the book is quoted from Mr. Patten's own rendition of the story:

"As I was riding along the road on my mule I suddenly noticed a very strange personage walking beside me.... His head was about even with my shoulders as I sat in my saddle. He wore no clothing, but was covered with hair. His skin was very dark. I asked him where he dwelt and he replied that he had no home, that he was a wanderer in the earth and traveled to and fro. He said he was a very miserable creature, that he had earnestly sought death during his sojourn upon the earth, but that he could not die, and his mission was to destroy the souls of men. About the time he expressed himself thus, I rebuked him in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by virtue of the Holy Priesthood, and commanded him to go hence, and he immediately departed out of my sight...."(Lycurgus A. Wilson, Life of David W. Patten [Salt Lake City: Deseret News, 1900], p. 50., as quoted by Spencer W. Kimball, The Miracle of Forgiveness [Salt Lake City, Bookcraft, Inc.]18th printing 1991 p.p. 127-128.)

Many of the previously told stories regarding a Native American connection to Bigfoot were published in order to help us link the Bigfoot sightings and folklore of the Native American people to the many Bigfoot sightings and encounters that occur today. The intent of this article is to show that there are connections to Bigfoot within American history. The fact that so many people from so many backgrounds have experienced Bigfoot and in many cases woven this creature into their folklore tells us that there must be more to this elusive creature than meets the eye.
