Date:
Valley county, ID
Nearest town: Warren
Nearest road: Warren Wagon Road
Conditions: sunny/stormy w/ sprinkles earlier (am)
Time: noon
Location: From McCall, ID. proceed north on Warren Wagon Rd. Go 3 mi. east past the Burgdorph & Ruby Mtn. area. Take the Forest Serv.
rd (#?) north (road to War Eagle
Mtn.). Shortly after crossing
Flat Creek, you come to a clear
area with a marshy area around
Grouse Creek. Here the road swings west then back north into some burnt trees. To the west there is a ridge runing
east/west. Park and hike 1/2
mile on the south bank of the
small stream closest to the ridge (north side of the ridge). Be prepared to climb over a myriad of fallen trees.
Proceed until you come to a
stone foundation next to the
stream and tailings piles. There is a mixed thicket of spruce, etc. behind (south) the foundation. About 50 yds
east of the foundation turn
south. From there, the next
200 yds is where the incident
occurred. The animal, if that is what it was, was just west of you, inside the treeline and was probably nesting in
the thicket when we approached
the foundation. You will still be climbing over lots of fallen logs in the clear area from the stream south toward
the ridge.
There is an easier back way to the thicket and stone foundation: Where the F.S. road swings west there is a smaller road branching off to the west which parallels the ridge then swings north and after 1/2 mile or so comes back down to the F.S road. An approach from that road would be a lot easier hike.
Description of event: After visiting the stone foundation, we retraced
our steps east for about 50 yds and turned south.
As we proceeded abreast of the southeast border of
the thicket we heard a rather distinct thump about
30 ft west of us. It was outside the treeline in
a "clear" area and the only thing there was a fallen tree trunk. Later I realized that the sound was probably a rock hitting the trunk.
In addition to a few sporadic, solitary thumps, two others stood out: Something hit a live tree on the treeline with considerable force. I looked up to see the lower branch (5 ft off the ground) swaying and the whole tree shivering. The sound, itself, was like someone with a baseball bat trying to make that tree a homerun ball. I had a clear view under the tree and there was nothing hiding there.
The trunk was around 1 to 1&1/2 ft. in diameter and was about 30 yds from us. The other sound
was a rock smashing against other rock. My impression was that a fist sized rock was smashed
against bedrock. That sound seemed about 100 yds
southeast of us.
