hot dry

Location:
I believe it was about 10-15 miles from Happy Camp and in a few miles proximity to Dillon Creek. I can't recall the exact location of the property but I can offer a few clues: a)The property has, in addition to a main house, remnants of a hippy commune(yurt, large barn, small a-frame loft. b) The unpaved driveway is approximately 1/2 mile long and gated from the main road with a pond and a meadow on the left as you travel along the drive into the property. To clarify, this is a residence surrounded by wilderness

REPORT DETAIL

Description of event: I was camping with a buddy and a group of environmental activists. We had eaten and our fire was taking care of itself. With nothing to do, I very much wanted to smoke a cigarette but either no one had any or they weren't giving them away. My buddy, Chris told me that there may be an old pack in the trunk of his car but that meant walking all the way back to the gate where the car was parked. Neither he nor any of the other dozen or so people there were willing to walk it with me so I had to do it alone. Any initial fear I had was brushed away by the idea of acquiring a cigarette that I could smoke! Chris gave me his keys and I was off down the road alone. It was a nice, warm evening and the moon was bright enough to light things up a bit and I felt pretty good aside from my "jones." I got to car and searched around inside but Chris was wrong and I had to walk back with no smokes. I head back towards the camp and I pass the pond on the left and I'm listening to the frogs and crickets and just enjoying the walk back. Then, from the right I hear something that I'd have to describe as a kind of "snort". This sound was very abrupt and very close and I stopped and turned my head to the right towards the treeline 15-20 feet from where I was standing. I hope that some people can appreciate that after I heard that first sound, my senses were heightened. So, I'm looking towards the trees and before I have time to question what it was it lets out what I would describe as a combination of a "snort" and a "growl" and a "hiss" and I could actually "see" that the sound was coming from, roughly, 7 or 8 feet from the ground and just inside the trees. Now, truthfully, I wasn't scared yet. I turned my head away and walked towards camp as "cool" as I could. I told myself not to run and I may even have said it out loud a couple times. My rationale for not running was if this was some "super-phonic" cougar I wasn't going to make a game of it. I heard cracking branches and twigs but after a few yards into my walk, I started to get hot. I started to sweat profusely from every pore and I couldn't hear anything but the pounding of my blood in my head. I'm certain that I was being followed but there was no way I was gonna look at what it was. A couple hundred yards later, the heat subsided and I could see the fire from camp. The closer that I got to camp the easier it was to process what had just happened. It was years before I came to a conclusion. Now, something about the second sound...however inaccurate or misleading my description of that sound is, one thing I remember clearly is that it was like notes in 2 or perhaps 3 different octaves. Compared to the way a person's words feel that wishes to harm you, I wouldn't say that this was a menacing voice but it wasn't asking me to stick around, either. And a question...how many cougars or mama bears would announce their presence to a human in the dead of night and not attack or even show themselves?
