I don’t think “curiouser” is a word. *grin* But nevermind that for now.
I wrote to Steve Cook over at Michigan-Dogman.com regarding my previous post about the “authorities” being interested in the film. All of this has been taking on a rather sinister undertone and I was hoping Steve could shed some light on WHICH authorities were asking for it.
Hi Steve….
I wanted to contact you regarding your contact with the “authorities” re: the Gable film. I’ve been following this closely on my blog and doing my own research on the subject. (http://www.oregonbigfoot.com/blog/)
May I ask WHICH authorities contacted you? Was it the DNR? How do they proclaim to have authority or jurisdiction over the film? I can understand them wanting a copy to study, but the original?
I’d appreciate some clairifcation on this. :)
Thanks,
Autumn
His response:
Hi Autumn -
…At this point, I’m going to remain quiet on the agency interested in the film. They are being friendly and informal about it, and we’re being cooperative in return. To identify them would likely result in a flood of inquiries from people following the story on the web, and that could quickly turn sour. We’ll just see what happens.
Best regards,
Steve
Steve,
Thanks for the response. Did you ever have any direct correspondence with “QuinlanOUR12″, who posted the second film on Youtube?
Best,
Autumn
Hello Autumn –
I sent a message to him a couple of days after the film showed up, but never heard back. Did you have contact?Steve
Here’s where things begin to take a turn for the curiouser. (There’s that word again. That isn’t.) I emailed Steve this morning with the following:
Hi Steve,
I didn’t hear back from him directly either, but there are a few things about his post on Youtube.com that bother me. There appear to be a lot of coincidences between Quinlan’s post on Youtube and the lyrics from your dogman song.
One of my members noted the following:
I listened to one version of his Dogman song (he’s updated it several times now for the anniversary years ‘97, ‘07) which one can see/hear at this YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uwFZYCwnS0
At 3:30 in the YouTube song one sees/hears this lyric:

Let’s see here; we have a van load of hippies, a park ranger with the name of Quinlan no less.
Later on at 3:44 in the song we see/hear this lyric:

Well now we have; ‘77, near the village of Bellaire, what else?
The YouTube poster QuinlanOUR12 supposedly was unaware of the earlier Gable film #1/Dogman film until it got national attention on television and yet he had things in his original YouTube post besides his username which tie directly into “The Legend of Dogman”song above.
Steve, did it strike you as odd that his username included the name “Quinlan”… not a very common name at all, and that it mentioned the location being near Bellaire? Here is “QuinlanOUR12’s” original post:
“I was at my little brother’s house Friday June 10th and my sister-in-law was watching Fox News. (She’s madly in lust with that Sean Hannity guy). A short segment came on about “the Beast of Bray Road”. Hannity then played a clip from a film named…”The Gable Film”.Sirens went off in my head. Our only uncle was a film nut in college, back in the seventies. He was always making home movies and beer commercials. He was even hired, (not for pay), to help the Michigan Department of Natural Resources investigate and document a bear attack, just north of Bellaire. (Our Grandmother worked in the Antrim County Courthouse,…. she had a hand in getting him the gig). The victim’s name was Aaron GABLE. …..GABLE!!! My mother tells us that after filming the attack scene, our Uncle John was so distraught that he packed up his stuff and moved to Florida, two weeks later!. Mom says his behavior was becoming very psychotic, he couldn’t sleep at night and he kept going on about how “bears have FIVE toes,….. dogs have four”!. Just a week after he left, a DNR officer hand-delivered the film that Uncle John made to my Mother’s house. It’s been in a box in the basement ever since. Now, I seem to recall that these films usually lasted about five minutes or so, but the film we have is only about a minute long… and the end of it was obviously torn off, not cut clean. I wonder just how much is missing? We almost threw this film away just a couple of years ago, but I wound up buying a vintage projector on eBay, just to see what was on this film. (Boy, was I suprised). NOW,….. I find that there’s this “Gable” film out there? I wonder if these two films are related. I’ll see if I can get it in better resolution, other than with Wifey’s camera-phone. (It might be expensive,….. but I’m sure it’ll be worth it). One thing’s for certain, whatever it was on that clip that they played on Fox News,….. it sure didn’t look like no Bear.”
The ONE reply to anyone that I know of reads:
“I’m sorry I haven’t answered any emails, I’ve been… unavoidably detained.
Let me just say that I can’t say for certain that Johnny wasn’t a big practical joker, he left Michigan before I really had a chance to know him. I didn’t shoot this film, I wish I could tell you with absolute certainty what this film is,….. but Denouncing Negative Reactions Can Often Vilify Every Rational Uniform Position, so I can only say that this looks like just a matter of individual interpretation. ……I hope you understand. I never meant to mislead anyone, or do anything illegal….. I just found this all very interesting and wanted to share. That’s all. Tell the troops I said good-bye.
(QuinlanOUR12)”
Denouncing Negative Reactions Can Often Vilify Every Rational Uniform Position = DNR COVER UP?
It also seems rather coincidental to me that the original Gable film was brought forth in ‘07.
Any light you can shed on this would be most appreciated.
Best, Autumn
I just emailed Steve this morning and got this response:
Hi Autumn -
Yes, I caught the Quinlan reference right away, but it didn’t really surprise me. If this person has lived in Northern Michigan for any length of time, he has certainly heard the song. It’s been playing on the radio here for over 20 years, and is inextricably woven into the local folklore.
As far as the Bellaire thing, I’m not sure what to make of it. That verse of the song was based on a series of odd events in Antrim County in the 60s and 70s, including a rash of UFO sightings and unusual animal reports (cougars mostly). The Bellaire verse was removed in the 2007 version to make room for a new final verse.
