Description of event: i was hunting whitetail deer in maine with my dad, the only way you can get to the hunting area is a logging road the is pretty steap and muddy. when you get to the top there the clearing and when you look up you can see the rock face it's most likely about 70 to 80 feet straight up and the back side slops down to another clearing. well the first night we were there, it was about 8 to 9 pm when my dad asked me if i had heard anything i said no then i did hear something it sounded like something big was walking around in the icy mud and through the bushes. well my dad grabbed his hunnting rifle witch was a 30-06 cal. he held it in his hands like a soldiar. then he said if anyone is out there you'd betta come out. nobody did just the sounds got futher away. the next morning when we woke up my dad and i went to see if we could see any tracks to see if it was a bear or a moose. it wasn't either one the tracks look just like our tracks. about 13- 15 inch long and about 5-6 inchs wide. then later that day we wanted to finish hunting so my dad waked down one road and i walked around the back side of the rock face and then when i got to the top i started to look around to see if i could see any deer or sence the deer tag came with a bear tag to maybe i'd see a bear. well when i looked down toward the bottom of the cliff and at the far end of a clearing i saw what looked like a bear about 200 yds away and i trained my 303.cal british enfield rifle on the object and aimed right about 2 inches above it's kill zone and pulled the trigger. i heard it hit and the creature fell over and got back up and stood up on two legs and ran off. i got scared because i thought i may have shot a person in a brown outfit. so i walked over to where i shot it and i looked down and seen the same tracks i'd seen earlier with my dad. so i followed them to see exactly what i shot, i'd must have followed those tracks for about half a mile then i started to notice how long the stides were and how deep the tracks went in to the dirt. (about 2-3 inches) so i knew it was about 3-4 hundred pounds easy. i knew that because i weighted 120 pounds and my tracks only sank about a quarter of a inch. i never saw any blood or hair, but there were trees that were 4 inces thick that were broken over right in line with the tracks. also i heard sounds like a low grunting like almost a warning or a challening sounds, even though i had my rifle witch was big enough to bring down a bear, and seen what happend when i shot it,i wasn't about to see if it was just bluffing or not. i got the heck out of there and found my dad and tould him what happend and he said lets go home and find another spot.
