REPORT DETAIL

Description of event: As a Native American indian I spend a lot of time in the woods on my days off from work, just to hunt, hike, and to get closer to nature. During one of my several trips to the wooded areas in my state I encountered a bedding area. At first I thought it might have been made by deer or possibly other game, but there was a very foul stench associated with this area. I investigated a little further and found what I believe to be a large set of tracks leading to and away from this site. I am not going to say they were footprints as they looked more like deep slide marks; as if you would slide in loose dirt while tring to climb a hill. These tracks were approximately 2-1/2 to 3 feet apart traveling diagonally up a steep incline. I did not notice them at first as I came in from the opposite side of the bedding area, furthest side away from the tracks. I was able to follow them for approximately 1/4 mile. This is when I noticed a faint odor like the one I smelled at the bedding area. At this time I proceeded as quietly as possible toward the direction from which I thought the smell was coming from. The wind was blowing in my face, so I knew it was not coming from the bedding area which at this time was approx 1 to 1-1/2 miles behind me. This is when I heard a very strange grunting or growling sound, unlike anything I have ever heard from wild game or a bear as I have heard plenty of these sounds before in the woods. The smell was also much stronger and more foul now and I was approximately 2 miles from the bedding site at this point. I listened for about minute or so then it became very quiet and the scent also started to fade out. The terrain was hard and rocky and there were not any more tracks other than some deep impressions here and there in the direction I was traveling. I did see some small broken limbs on trees approximately 6-1/2 feet to 7 feet up from the base of the trunk. I then left this area. I returned approximately one month later, this time with a digital recorder. I was about 6 miles from my original encounter on this second visit. It was late in the evening, around 4:30 or so. I took up a position in a dry creek bed and had been sitting there for about 2 hours when I noticed a faint scent of the same odor I had smelled on the previous occasion. I remained hidden and stayed very quiet. This is when I heard what I know to be the sound of an injured deer. There were a lot of high pitched sounds along with the deer sounds as well as the same grunting sounds that I heard on the previous encounter. I recorded these sounds for approximately 2 to 3 minutes. I then crawled up the embankment from the creek bed. Approximately 30 yards from there I found the entrails of a freshly slain deer. I sat there with recorder on for 30 minutes. During this time I got a strong scent of the same foul odor as before. Then suddenly a baseball sized rock rock was thrown in my direction. It landed around 20 or so feet away from my position and that is when I became a little scared and quietly left the area. I will be returning to this area this spring to further investigate.
