Description of event: I was about 16, hunting solo. Location, about 9 miles south of Rolla.
Before dawn, I set out and walked through a pasture that I had often crossed to get to the woods I usually hunted. To the far edge of this pasture there was a thicket of cedars. I walked into the thicket to a small clearing and sat with back to a cedar, 50 feet from a seasonal creek and wind to my face. 30 minutes, mostly nature watching, I hear this large crash to my left. Not sure how far it was, leaves on the forest tend to exaggerate noises sometimes, could have been a limb falling, I really didn't know. I brief time passed and I noticed the woods were quiet, eerie quit. Then I picked up a pungent smell in the air and heard heavy steps.
I hunt, I had killed and nothing had ever kicked in the freeze instinct like I felt that moment. Eventually, I caught movement, through the under limbs of some cedars, bipedal movement and very large. I could not make out what it was, only from the would be knees down, dark and hair shagged. The wind shifted, and my scent must have caught it because with a thunderess noise the object suddenly rushed off. I heard it's heavy steps for a few moments and then nothing. Eerie silence again. My 1st thought was it could be another hunter, I made some noise to alert my presence. But nothing responded, I'll admit I was spooked and decided to head back to the house.
All these years later, I still question them occurrences of that morning. What was it that I saw? I had hunted that spot many times after that, but nothing has ever brought closer to that one morning. The area is being developed now.
