Nearest town: Provolt
Nearest road: Hwy 238
Conditions: clear and cool
Time: early morning
Location: About 4 or 5 miles east of Provolt. Right hand side of the road, turn on a dirt road five or six miles. On the right hand side, is a mining trench about 2 miles long and 75 feet wide. About 7 or 8 feet deep with brush and timber inside .
Description of event: Me, my uncle and my cousins went to this site to hunt deer. We lined up 6 abreast on the far side of the trench to push any deer out. As we walked along, I inadvertently got forced down into the trench. I then kept with the direction of the trench. After a short time I smelled [something], it smelled like some stinking animal. Then I heard it running back and forth as if frantically looking for something. I could tell by the sound it was two legged. I could feel the ground shake, like when a herd of elk get spooked. At this point I hear a tree maybe 6 to 10 inches on the stump come crashing to the ground behind me. At this point I made extreme haste for the walls of the trench. Pulling on vines I made my way out and straight for our vehicles. I did not linger at the trench for further investigation. From all of my experience in the woods I can with full confidence say what I encountered was not a bear and was definitely two legged.
