Location: It was along forest route 1N04 (Buchanan road I think) between the Clavey river bridge and the town of Tuolomne. Somewhere toward the middle of those two points.

REPORT DETAIL

Description of event: I'm pretty sure it was in 1999, maybe 2000, before I moved to PA. I used to go up in the summer, particularly around my birthday to explore the Clavey river canyon near a place called God's bath as I had found some hints to a possible cavern complex there. After the day was done I was driving home (Tracy, CA) I left late and it was not too long after dark. I was on a straight stretch of unremarkable road that was mostly steep on the right with an occasional open area to fairly dense woods. I noticed in my high beams no more than a hundred yards ahead a dark, squat form on the side of the road. I thought it might be a bear eating some road kill or something. As I slowed down the thing stood up like a person would, turned and simply walked into the woods out of my sight. I did not stop to investigate since I was admittedly a bit rattled by it. It never occurred to me to report it and in fact I didn't really tell anyone about it for several years afterward, doubting they would believe me. Truth is, I don't know what it was, but it had arms that swung like a person as it turned around and was covered in dark fur. I must have been about fifty yards away before it disappeared and didn't really get a detailed look in the few seconds I saw it. I was asked by a co-worker recently if I believed in ufo's, bigfoot, etc. so I told her of it. And since it was on my mind I was curious to see how common such sightings were and I found myself here and figured what the heck, might as well relate my experience, even though it was more than a decade ago.
