Boy smells foul odor, has brief sighting while in the back of pickup

Time: early afternoon
Location: On a fire trail in the Willamette forest north east [editor: SE?] of Portland about two hours, maybe more. Going N.E [editor: SE?] of Mt. Hood and towards the three sisters mountains which are visible from this site. at an elevation of sum 6-7000 ft. In the foreground or a S.W direction you could see Mt. Hood roughly 30 to 40 mile in the distance. The three sisters were probably 100 to 150 miles away. i do know that this area is the outer edge of the N.E section of the willamette national forest in 1972. There had been recent cutting there as dad liked traveling the logging roads for bear do to their scavaging nature. I believe that the logging company may have been Boise Cascade at the time. The town of Tillamook was maybe two hour driving from where this occurred.
REPORT DETAIL
Description of event: Riding in the back of dad's truck on the dog box, we were doing about 20-25 mph when i began breathing strange. being an asthmatic, this was nothing unexpected. Then my eyes started watering profusely and the dogs started going berzerk. Dad told me to leave them alone. It wasn't me. I then looked to the N.E and saw what looked to me like an extremely large hairly leg going up an embankment. I estimate it's height at 3.25 to 3.5 feet from the heel to mid thigh. Dad stopped the truck a 1/4 mile from there to chastise me for agitating the dogs. He then got a nose full of what caused this entire episode.
We drove back to the spot and sure as heck, there had been something quite large there with in the last 5 minutes. Dad virually ran back to the truck and said (we're getting the f**k out of here right now). Brother Rick was crying because dad was vary nervous indeed. So nervous in fact that while getting in the truck he loaded and cock his 30/30 and put both me and Rick in the cab of the truck.
The smell was horrid. If i had to describe it I would have to say it would be a concoction of burning human flesh, skunk spray, slurry hole and rotten food all mixed with strong scent of sulfer.
